CASE STUDY

Power factor correction for actual supply conditions

Size power factor correction equipment by considering reactive power, harmonics and the installation configuration together.

The context

Measurements were taken at the outputs of four MV/LV transformers serving two furnace lines at a glass container manufacturing plant operating continuously.

The findings

The four sections show different loads, reactive power, power factors and harmonic distortion. Identical transformer ratings do not imply identical electrical behaviour.

Technical interpretation

Reactive power requirements must be assessed alongside harmonic content and operating configurations. These factors influence the choice of power factor correction equipment and the assessment of resonance risk.

NEXT STEPS

The measurements support the choice of detuned power factor correction, also taking continuous operation and expected component stresses into account.
