Coordinated SPDs
SPDs limit transient overvoltages and are coordinated at the service entry, distribution boards and sensitive equipment. Type, protection level, earthing arrangement and connections depend on the installation.
TRANSIENT OVERVOLTAGES
Transient overvoltages can propagate through power and signal connections. Protection requires suitable devices and proper integration into the installation.
SPDs limit transient overvoltages and are coordinated at the service entry, distribution boards and sensitive equipment. Type, protection level, earthing arrangement and connections depend on the installation.
Some devices combine surge limitation with attenuation of oscillatory transients and conducted interference. For controls, power supplies and sensitive electronics, selection considers the earthing arrangement, connections and documented performance at the relevant frequencies. This function requires specific data and cannot automatically be attributed to a standard SPD.
Event characterisation, review of existing protection and technical coordination with the designer and installer to define relevant measures and checks.
General guidance by solution type, using a 400 V low-voltage supply as reference. Ranges summarise the ratings considered and do not imply that all combinations are available. Connection, rating and actual performance must be checked for the project.
| Configuration | Ratings and supply | Features | Checks required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coordinated SPDs | Reference low-voltage supply 400 V; device to be selected | Transient overvoltage limitation | Supply arrangement, protection level and connections |
| Protection with transient attenuation | Reference low-voltage supply 400 V; device to be selected | Surge limitation and interference attenuation as specified | Frequency-dependent performance, supply arrangement and connections |
Surge limitation and frequency-dependent attenuation are distinct characteristics and must be checked for the selected device.
